Clear explanation of the important distinction between religious Islam and political Sharia. We support freedom of religion but firmly oppose Sharia governance in the USA.
We support religious freedom but oppose Sharia as a political system in America.
Many Americans are confused about the difference between Islam as a religion and Sharia as a political and legal system. This distinction is crucial.
We fully support the First Amendment right of American Muslims to practice their faith peacefully — to pray, attend mosque, observe dietary laws, and celebrate religious holidays. However, we strongly oppose political Sharia as a system of governance, law, or public policy in the United States.
Here are the 5 key differences:
1. Personal Faith vs. Comprehensive Legal System
Religious Islam is a personal faith focused on spiritual beliefs, prayer, morality, and the relationship between the individual and God. Political Sharia is a complete system of law and governance that regulates public life, criminal justice, family matters, finance, education, and the state itself.
2. Freedom of Religion
Religious Islam allows individuals to practice their faith privately and in community, protected by the First Amendment. Political Sharia in its traditional form criminalizes apostasy (leaving Islam), often with severe punishment, including death. This directly conflicts with America’s guarantee of religious liberty and freedom of conscience.
3. Equality Under the Law
American values affirm equal rights for all citizens regardless of sex or religion. Political Sharia traditionally creates legal inequalities: women often receive half the inheritance of men, a woman’s testimony may count as half in certain cases, men may practice polygamy, and non-Muslims are granted second-class status (dhimmis).
4. Freedom of Speech and Expression
The United States protects the right to criticize any idea or religion, even if offensive. Political Sharia enforces strict blasphemy laws that punish criticism of Islam or its Prophet, severely limiting free speech and public debate.
5. Source of Authority and Governance
The U.S. Constitution is based on “We the People,” popular sovereignty, and separation of religion and government. Political Sharia claims divine authority that stands above all man-made laws and democratic institutions. It seeks to merge religion and state rather than separate them.
Why the Distinction Matters
Confusing personal religious practice with political Sharia leads to misguided policies. Peaceful religious observance deserves protection. However, any effort to implement Sharia as a parallel legal or political system threatens the Constitution, women’s rights, free speech, and equal justice.
America functions successfully with one law for all — the Constitution of the United States. This principle protects every citizen, including Muslim Americans who came here to live in freedom.
Our Position
We support religious freedom for Muslims and people of all faiths. We oppose Sharia as a political and legal system in America.
Defending this clear boundary is not bigotry — it is essential to preserving American liberty, equality, and constitutional governance for future generations.
One Nation. One Constitution. One Set of Laws.
This article supports genuine religious freedom while defending the supremacy of the United States Constitution.
